The Emperor title was given to the ruler of the Roman Empire during the autocratic form of government (27 BC - AD 476).

Similarly to Roman Emperors, Roman Dictators reign while Rome was a Republic (508 BC - 27 BC). The most known Dictator was Gaius Julius Caesar.

There are not many differences between Emperors and Dictators: both is the supreme ruler with all powers.

Also, before the republic, there were Roman Kings (753 BC - 509 BC). There are no written records that survived that time. But legends and stories were written during the Republic and Empire time.

Rome was founded as a simple settlement in Central Italy along the Tiber river and next to a hill. During Rome's first 100 years, it was rules by a succession of 7 kings (based on legends). When the last Roman King (Lucius Tarquinius Superbus) was overthrown, Rome was governed by a complex constitution ruled by the Senate which eventually selected a leader (Julius Caesar). Until the a civil war that tranformed the role of dictators to a role of roman empire emperors.
